IGNITION featuring JOHNNY TRIKA
Join Subtek as we continue our new underground techno odyssey Ignition Series by featuring artists throughout the globe in this exclusive 10PM to 5AM warehouse 90's style events. This edition we are welcoming Montreal's very own, Johnny Trika.
Johnny is fast becoming the producer’s “producer” in the techno world. A devoted master of gear, Johnny is well practiced at teasing out fluid and darkly rich bass lines that keep the nightclub and festival crowds moving on the floor. Hear his music once and it is no surprise why Johnny is now being regarded as one of the new breeds of live techno performers.

More on Johnny:
After spending his late teen years in the studio mastering his sound, Johnny connected with Ali “Dubfire” Shirazinia, a meeting that led to 3 EPs on Dubfire’s prestigious SCI+TEC label. 2016’s ‘Day Tripper’ sat at the #1 spot on Beatport’s Minimal charts for over a week. Johnny is also featured on Matt Sassari’s ‘Panterre’ label, contributing with a remix for Matt’s own ‘Don Freeze Up’.
Johnny keeps his live sets stacked only with original material, both released hits, and unreleased gems. He has performed at Output, Stereo, CODA, BPM Festival (twice) and Block 33. He’s performed in Italy, Greece, Sweden, Spain, Portugal, and Cyprus. He plays in Canada and the U.S. regularly. And, what’s more, his tracks are consistently featured in the DJ sets of heavyweights like Richie Hawtin and Dubfire and in the sets you hear at the big festivals like Time Warp, Awakenings, Tomorrowland. Johnny’s mission is to push the development of techno and to never let it sit stagnant all the while injecting his own artistic essence.
Johnny’s focus and intensity bleed into his live performances, showing up in his experimentation with track arrangements live to produce sets that cannot be duplicated again, all the while delivering the patented “Johnny Trika” sound to the dance floor.

JASON MORAN 'FATS WALLER DANCE PARTY"
Postponed to a later date.
Tickets: $15 ⋅ $10 Duke Students
Tickets and Info on DP Site
Jason Moran is one of modern music’s most vital forces. Through a series of ambitious projects meant to bring jazz to a wider audience — such as the 2007 Duke Performances commission In My Mind, which reimagined Thelonious Monk’s 1959 Town Hall performance — Moran has become one of the most sought-after pianists and bandleaders in jazz today. With frequent daring nods to funk, hip-hop, and contemporary composition, Moran has expanded jazz’s stylistic reach and given it new vitality. Now a label head and the artistic director for jazz at the Kennedy Center, Moran is the form’s “greatest young conceptualist,” as JazzTimes exclaimed.
In 2011, Moran accepted an audacious commission: Update the music and mood of Fats Waller, the consummate Harlem pianist and entertainer. Moran took Waller’s hits and recast them for the twenty-first century, turning “Ain’t Misbehavin’” into a sumptuous funk jam and “Ain’t Nobody’s Business” into a seductive soul rumble. Supported by multitalented singer Lisa E. Harris, trumpet standout Leron Thomas, and the kinetic rhythm section of bassist Tarus Mateen and drummer Charles Haynes, Moran — crowned in an oversized and grinning papier-mâché Fats Waller mask made by Haitian artist Didier Civil — joins dance, song, and humor. For one night only, Durham Fruit & Produce becomes the liveliest dance club in the city. The show features an opening breakbeat set by DJ DAMU, and the evening will be hosted by MC and spoken word artist Dasan Ahanu. Food will be available from SoGood Pupusas and Soul Fresh, and there will be a cash bar.
*Jason Moran Fats Waller Dance Party is co-sponsored by Art of Cool, Museum of Durham History, Duke Department of African & African American Studies, the Mary Lou Williams Center for Black Culture, Center for Multicultural Affairs, and Duke Swing.
