OUR MISSION
Our underlying mission is to support alternative, local, and emerging (“alt/loc/em”) artists. We support experimentation and help build audiences who explore and engage with the arts, artists, and each other. This encourages a more vibrant creative scene in Durham and helps fill the needs of artists.
To this end, we provide in-kind equipment and technical staff, subsidized labor, free or low-cost studio space, zero-commission galleries and event space, paid gigs and commissioned works, direct financial grants, and access to our digital marketing channels.
We are a mixing place of cultures and communities. We do not follow quotas, but we have goals. Our producers make room by expanding line-ups for alt/loc/em artists, and we proactively reach out to these artists. We’re proud that over 70% of our audience members see artists in our focus areas each year.
Furthermore, we are a safe space by promoting norms that help our audiences and artists enjoy their time with us. We want people here to be their full, authentic, human selves. Thus our norms include consent for physical contact, respect for pronouns, and banning phobic or threatening speech.
